10:45  -  11:15 am

The National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) is for practical safeguarding of the public and workers during the installation, operation, and maintenance of electric power supply and communications network facilities. This talk will review the major changes proposed and initially accepted for the inclusion in the 2022 NESC code during the 2018 IEEE subcommittee meetings along with the major discussion items from those meetings. Topics will include grid-connected solar farms, NESC role in resiliency, congestion and clearance issues around 5G wireless antennas/equipment location, ground rod specifications, work rules around batteries and arc flash issues, and rules covering powering circuits included communications cables. The consequences of the NESC and the most recent changes and trends will be reviewed. for the operation and construction of communications networks.

The discussion will provide a roadmap for how to influence the NESC through submissions of public comments on the 2022 Preprint during 2019-2020, attendance at NESC workshops and involvement in subcommittee working groups/task forces.
